Goal Setting Theory... Masai Style!
Why Is Goal Setting Important?
To answer the question: why is goal setting important? I'd love to provide you with some goal setting theory with telling the story of John Grinder. He was one of the founders of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).
In John Grinders' young days he studied the language of a certain Masai-tribe in Kenya.
He approached the village and laid down his sleeping bag on the edge of the village, carefully contacting the tribe. After some time he was adopted by one of the Masai families and he lived for several months with this family, learning their ways, techniques and language.
At a certain point his "father" offered him to be initiated as a Masai-warrior. Grinder accepted the offer gladly and with several other young Masai he had to undergo a series of rituals and tests.
One of those was to travel and find his way through the dense jungle. He had to reach another Masai tribe, a 3 day hike away. Guess what...
He failed this test miserably!
He kept on losing his way, and after trying again and again, he kept on getting lost... At last an 'uncle' came to the rescue.
This uncle had a lot of experience in jungle travel and agreed to teach him some tricks of the trade. He explained to John: "first of all you climb the highest tree you can find. When you are all the way up, you look along the canopy and determine your direction. Then you find another high point, a tree or a hilltop about a day's trip away.
And then you just start walking, keeping the direction of your tree in mind. Should you lose your way again, just climb another tree, look for your orientation point, so you know where to go again".
You see that the goal setting theory can work for you in exactly the same way as it did for the Masai?
I can be your 'uncle' and we'll will find some high trees together to guide you through your jungle now, so we know where to go.
